The Ministry of Type

Nice graphic, this will make a very happy desktop for my laptop. despite birds "being dead" {self coined phrase for the use of birds and deer in silkscreen art} this works for me in the mid-century 2 color print method of Lohse and many many others.

Free Font Aller by Dalton Maag Ltd

First decent free font I've seen for a while. Downloading now to see if the kerning pairs and punctuation can hold muster for daily design use, so few of the free ones do.

Goodbye, Speak Up

Sad, sad, sad day.

"Earlier this year, Bryony and I made the decision to close Speak Up. Seeing weeks and weeks go by where we have only two or three posts (and one of them being the Quipsologies round-up) has become too painful for us. It’s also like watching Ozzy Ozbourne today, still holding on to that rock glory but he can’t really rock no more, not like he used to"

Brionvega's retro-futurist MP3 / radio stolen from the set of Fahrenheit 451

Retro-Modernest hotness

Brionvega prove that sometimes sexy is enough. The Italian company's been doing its thing since the 1940s, and this radio is actually a refresh of a model that first debuted in 1965. The RR227 (as it's affectionately known) is pretty starightforward -- an AM / FM tuner that sports an SD card slot for MP3 or WMA playback. This bad boy also features headphone out, aux in, and a USB connection. It will run off of European mains power (Yanks will need to get an AC adapter) or, if you're picnicking with a loved one near the Seine, it also runs off batteries. Available in black, white, or red. Retails for €199 (about $260).

UFO Symposium 1968: Shepard UFO Shape Array

ARRAY OF UFO SHAPES

The array is intended only to convey some idea of the variety of shapes that have appeared, it does not give an adequate impression of the relative frequencies with which the different shapes have appeared. In fact, the images most commonly appearing in my total sample show either a small point, formless blob, or fuzzy ellipse of light in a night sky, or else a dark, more or less distinct ellipse (like that shown in D9) against a lighter sky. With very few exceptions, such as the rocket- or "cigar"-shaped object with "exhaust trail" (G9), which allegedly was photographed over Peru in 1952, the more well-defined objects appear to be some variant of the "Saucer" or "domed disk.

Leaving Your Mark

70 year-old Buddhist monk Hua Chi has been praying in the same spot at his temple in Tongren, China for over 20 years. His footprints, which are up to 1.2 inches deep in some areas, are the result of performing his prayers up to 3000 times a day. Now that he is 70, he says that he has greatly reduced his quantity of prayers to 1,000 times each day.

Pentagram's Lisa Strausfeld: DS+R Web site design

This has to be one of the most sublimely wonderful UIs I've ever seen. Every little detail has been worked out. But don't just look at the top level of it, get in and poke around, the sense of 3d space has been polished and refined to such an extent that every little thing is a delight to interact with. I think I need to go learn some actionscript.

Go on now and dive in

The site is also a finalist in the 2009 National Design Awards.

Via Pentagram: Lisa Strausfeld has been selected as a finalist in the Interaction Design section of this year’s National Design Awards presented by Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. This is the first year the awards have recognized interaction design as a category. Lisa's co-nominees are Potion and Perceptive Pixel. The New York Times calls this year's awards "the 10th annual incarnation of the design world’s Oscars.
