I'm quite taken with this image

I'm quite taken with this image, we've all been places where the best image we can capture is quite useless for conveying the essence of the situation. Well done Mr Surtees.

Broadhong Design: Rolling Band-aid

Traditional band-aid its paper wrapping are all disposable and become waste. By redesigning the traditional bad-aid into a roll-type like tapes, we can not only reduce the paper waste but also reduce the volume of the traditional package by two thirds, saving transportation cost.

Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA):
3 Minutes – The Book

3 Minutes is the second publication from non-profit organisation Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA) and the second collaboration between DAHRA and Tibet Relief Fund.

The premise of the book is to show the full extent of the Tibetan conflict through 10 diverse and extremely powerful 3-minute interviews, each describing the 3 minutes that changed their lives. This idea is reflected in the covers of each booklet, which separately make beautiful abstract covers but together form to make a ‘3’.

Contributors were asked to translate these 3 minute interviews into 16 printed page booklets using primarily typography. The result is a book made up of 10 beautifully designed booklets from some of the world's best designers showcasing considered and stunning typography.

Ian LYNAM: kiosk for Néojaponisme

A proposed design for a train station kiosk for Néojaponisme harking back to the work of early Japanese graphic designers and architects as much as Constructivistists. The kiosk would dispense a highly curated selection of printed ephemera, music, and offer fresh coffee/light banter/scathing criticism to the curious.

TypArchive

Amidst a landscape of vapid strip malls, unsightly visual clutter and sterile signage, hand-painted lettering retains an aesthetic to be treasured. Unfortunately, like other crafts that have suffered in the digital age, sign painting is an occupation of the past. Today it's easy for any layman with minimal computer knowledge to produce a sign within minutes, but the skill acquired to artfully produce hand lettering usually took years of apprenticeships, dedication and true talent.

Nessim Higson: I Am Always Hungry

Not being one to gush over Web sites very often, I just found the site of Nessim Higson via Computerlove and I must say I'm quite smitten with the UI and the work. Go see for yourself.

37signals: Rework

37 Signals wont say much about their new book Rework except "Everything we know about business is in Rework" and that Crown (their publisher) designed the cover. Nice job Designers at Crown.

Felissimo: 500 colored pencil set

designed by felissimo for social designer this complete set of 500 colored pencils consists of 20 units, each pencil telling its own story with a unique name. you cannot buy the complete set of pencils all at once, but you can receive them over the course of 20 months. four different display methods let you keep your pencils at hand, while being displayed either as an artwork, or kept aside as a special collection. the cases have been designed especially for the 500 colored pencils and are available in a limited edition.

'orchestra' is a wall-mounted display which allows you to snap and swap pencils, giving you control over how to orchestrate colors on your wall.

Exerpt from an interview with Jim Coudal

If it’s a good idea and it gets you excited, try it, and if it bursts into flames, that’s going to be exciting too. People always ask, ‘What is your greatest failure?’ I always have the same answer—We’re working on it right now, it’s gonna be awesome!

Yellow Bird: 360° VR video

Looking at yellowBird, the video that records in 360 makes a photo 360 view look pretty one dimensional. With the video demo all a person has to do is press play and move the cursor in the direction that they want to see. There’s six lenses mounted on a tripod that captures an amazing view in motion that I’ve never seen before. While reading about the technology, another impressive aspect of the camera is that it records sound in 360 too.Tons of potential to do great things with the service. Imagine what could be done with this camera and augmented reality…

MSR: E-Wing Shelter

The MSR E-Wing Ultralight Shelter is a more sophisticated version of an improvised poncho shelter. Small, lightweight and able to be configured in multiple ways and locations, the E-Wing could save your life some day. Because the E-Wing doubles as a poncho, it could be used for a lot more than just a shelter. See the US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76 for more poncho uses and shelter types.

A physical manifestation of my graphic design ideal; reduce to the simplest possible form and yet still be fully functional.

Messograf: Pocket Caliper/Pen

Until 3D scanners become cheaper and ubiquitous, ID'ers are still going to need that tomahawk-like set of calipers in the drawer.

The Multi-function Messograf Pocket Caliper/Pen is a handy substitute. While the stubby prongs aren't long enough to, say, read the diameter of a bottle, they're enough to determine wall thickness, board thickness, wire gauges, fastener diameters, etc.

If you're going to pick one up, avoid Garrett Wade tool catalog, which sells them for $27.90; Passion for Pens has them for $19.55.
